Mewa delivers the first Hyundai 4×2 hydrogen truck for Germany for bodywork

Hydrogen mobility in heavy transport is gaining momentum. Mewa, the Europe-wide specialist in textile sharing, is also focusing on zero emission in mobility. Following the two Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell in Switzerland, Mewa is preparing the first 4×2 hydrogen electric truck for use in northern Germany. On September 1, the handover for the assembly of the vehicle took place in Switzerland, in the presence of Kay Simon (Mewa), Daniel Keller (HHM) and Christian Galli (GK Grünenfelder).

Mewa, the group of companies operating throughout Europe, has long relied on environmentally friendly materials and processes in its core competence, as well as on the circular economy. With the same consistency, the specialist in textile sharing also relies on the environmentally friendly solution with hydrogen-electric commercial vehicles in the transport sector.

This makes September 1, 2022, all the more historic in the company’s history. Following the deployment and positive experiences with the first two Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell in Switzerland, Kay Simon, Head of Mobility Concepts at Mewa Textil-Service AG & Co. Management OHG, took delivery of the first 4×2 Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell of the new series for the German market. Daniel Keller, COO of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility AG, presented him with the keys, which he handed over – for the bodywork of the vehicle – directly to Christian Galli, Sales Manager at bodywork specialist GK Grünenfelder AG.

Kay Simon, Mewa: «On the way to climate neutrality, the choice of our delivery vehicles is one of the most important factors for us at Mewa. As far as possible, we also want to make greater use of fossil-free forms of propulsion on longer delivery routes. Now we have reached another milestone: thanks to the cooperation with Hyundai, there are already three delivery areas for the hydrogen truck: Switzerland, Baden-Württemberg and now northern Germany. I am delighted about this good cooperation.»

Daniel Keller, COO of HHM, adds: «After the introduction of the vehicles and the deployment of now 47 commercial vehicles in Switzerland, we are expanding our presence in Europe, with a next focus in Germany. Mewa is a partner and a customer with ideal conditions for us to deploy the latest series XCIENT Fuel Cell in Germany.»

Before the new Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell is deployed in the north of Germany, in the greater Hamburg region, specialist GK Grünenfelder AG is assembling the vehicle in Switzerland. Sales Manager Christian Galli: «With the experience of previous setups, we are able to assemble and prepare the latest XCIENT Fuel Cell for use within a very short time thanks to optimized production processes. For us, it is of course also a great moment and we are proud to be part of this innovative mobility concept. »

First series-produced hydrogen-electric truck

The XCIENT Fuel Cell vehicles have a range of around 400 kilometres. They store the hydrogen in seven tanks, with an average refuelling time of ten minutes. The XCIENT Fuel Cell for Mewa is a further development of the first series-produced H2 trucks to be used in Germany. As soon as they leave the ship, the vehicles go straight to the body-builders, where the customised versions (e.g. refrigerated or dry boxes) are configured.
